Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson

Two of the greatest hurlers in baseball history are pictured above. WALTER JOHNSON of the Washington Senators and CHRISTY MATHEWSON of the New York Giants made several entries in the record book which many of today's pitching stars still chase and fail to equal. Johnson won a total of 417 games and struck out 3,509 hitters in his 21 years - earning the nickname "The Big Train." Johnson led the American League 12 times in whiffs and tossed 110 career shutouts - tops in baseball history. Mathewson, nicknamed "The Big Six," won a National League record 373 games and won three shutout games against the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1905 World Series. Both Johnson and Mathewson (along with Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Honus Wagner) were members of the inaugural group of inductees into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1936.
